Body Text~Reise und Muller have recently unveiled the biggest update to their “Birdy” folder since it was introduced. The previous tube-type frame has been replaced with a monocoque frame, which is made from 2 flat pieces, pressed into shape, then joined together by a precision welding robot. The end result is 150grams lighter than the previous frame, stiffer than the previous frame, and has a 6cm lower step-over height. The new Birdy folds in the same way as the old one, so it’s just as compact, and easy to fold. It also has the great, "quality" ride of the old Birdy.

The other big change to the model range is that the old colour-coded model designations are no longer used, instead the bikes have a more descriptive name - scroll down for descriptions of each of the new models. Each model is available in a choice of five colours.

As an added bonus, each model comes with a height-adjustable handlebar stem as standard. Choose between the more upright "comfort" position stem, or the leaning forward "sport" stem when you order the bike.

At the time of writing, Birdy orders are coming very quickly - typically 2-3 weeks and sometimes less. It's a good time to order one.~~~463~642~~

Birdy CITY~The Birdy City has an 8-speed Nexus gear hub. It is a city/commuting bike, and is equivalent to the old Birdy Green model.~A lightweight, fast city/commuting bike, fitted with a Shimano Nexus 8-speed gear hub. Birdy TOURING~The Birdy Touring has a Shimano Intego 3 x 8 gear set. It is an excellent machine, ideal for those who want to tour on a folding bike – all Birdy models are capable of carrying a full set of touring bags. This model is equivalent to the old Birdy Blue model.~If you want a small-wheeled folding bike suitable for touring, the Birdy Touring is one of the very best models available. It has a wide-ranging Shimano 3x8 gear system, and fitted with front and rear racks, it can easily carry a full set of touring bags! Birdy ROHLOFF~The Birdy Rohloff's name is self-explanatory - it's a Birdy fitted with the awesome Rohloff 14-speed gearhub. This hub and the Birdy go together like they were made for each other, and we think the Birdy Rohloff is a strong contender for being the best folding tourer available. This model is equivalent to the old Birdy Grey model~A true folding touring bike - fitted with the Rohloff speedhub, which gives the rider:

14 equally spaced internal gears - equivalent to a wide-ranging 21 speed deraiileur system, but without unneccesary duplication of gears

straight chainline - less chain wear, less likely to sling off when folding.

All the mechanical gear bits are inside the rear hub shell, and they run inside an oil bath.

Like all birdy folders, the Birdy Rohloff can be fitted with front and rear pannier racks, and it can easily carry a full set of touring bags.

Birdy SPEED~The Birdy Speed is fitted with Shimano Doere XT 9-speed derailleur gears. It is designed to be a fast road machine, and is similar in specification to the old Birdy Black model.~A lightweight folding bike, suitable for fast road riding.~Birdy SPEED - Code%3A 7298|294|~463~731~~

Birdy RED~The birdy red, with its older style tube frame, remains in the range as an "entry level" model.~The old, er, "classic" Red model is still available in its original tube-frame form as an "entry level" Birdy.
